Plastic Additive Trade Name Lookup: Equivalents, CAS and Suppliers for 437 Substances

This plastic additive trade name lookup turns a trade name such as Irganox 1010 into its generic chemical, its CAS and EC numbers and every other trade name stored for the same substance. The reference behind it holds 437 substances, 324 of them with at least one trade name, for 920 trade names in total.

The cross-reference also runs in reverse: type a generic name, a synonym, an abbreviation or a CAS number and the tool lists the trade names stored for that identity. A shared CAS number is where the lookup stops and the datasheet starts, because two grades with one CAS number still differ in purity, volatiles and yellowness.

What the Trade Name Lookup Returns: Identity, Equivalents and Producers#

The lookup returns 3 things for every match: the chemical identity of the substance, every trade name stored for it and the producer or note recorded next to each name. A trade name is a brand, and the same molecule is sold under different brands by BASF, Songwon, Adeka, Sumitomo and other producers, so a buyer or formulator meeting an unfamiliar name needs the chemistry behind it first.

The identity block uses the same fields as the substance records that index the 43 families of plastic additives on this site. Any field the reference does not hold reads "not recorded in this reference", never an estimate.

How to Look Up a Trade Name in 5 Steps#

Look up a trade name in 5 steps: type it, pick the record, read the identity, read the equivalents and then compare the datasheets.

  1. Type the trade name, generic name or CAS number into the search box; results update as you type, and spacing and hyphens are ignored, so "Irganox1010" finds Irganox 1010.
  2. Pick the matching substance when more than one record appears; a short entry such as "Irg" matches 34 records, and the list narrows with every character.
  3. Read the identity block: generic name, CAS number, EC number, formula, molar mass, additive family and function.
  4. Read the trade names stored for the same substance; the name you searched is marked "your search" and the producer stands in the second column.
  5. Compare purity, volatiles and yellowness on the datasheet of each grade before treating one name as a substitute for another.

The 6 example buttons under the search box load Irganox 1010, Tinuvin 770, Chimassorb 944, Exolit OP 1230, Millad 3988 and the CAS number 6683-19-8, one per common question type.

Reverse Lookup: From a Generic Name or CAS Number to Its Trade Names#

The reverse lookup accepts 5 kinds of input and returns the trade names stored for the matching identity. A CAS number is checked against its check digit before the search runs, so a mistyped 6683-19-9 is flagged as invalid instead of returning an empty result without a reason.

The 5 accepted inputs are listed below.

  • CAS number with hyphens, for example 6683-19-8, or the same digits without hyphens
  • EC number, for example 229-722-6
  • Generic chemical name, in full or in part
  • Synonym, for example Antioxidant 1010 or UV-770
  • Abbreviation, for example DMDBS, AlPi or DEHP

A second CAS number on a record counts as a match too, so a US-registered CAS finds the same record as the EU one. For a search that starts from the number and needs the full identity table without the trade-name focus, the plastic additive CAS number lookup runs on the same data.

Same CAS, Different Grade: What to Compare on the Datasheet#

Sharing a CAS number does not make two grades interchangeable: purity, volatiles and yellowness have to be compared datasheet against datasheet. The tool groups trade names by chemical identity only, and a CAS number identifies the molecule, not the grade made from it by a given plant.

What does a datasheet comparison check? The 5 properties below differ between grades of one substance and decide whether a switch is safe.

  1. Purity or assay. A commodity "antioxidant 1010" certificate of analysis from China specifies an assay of at least 98 %.
  2. Volatiles. The same certificate allows at most 0.5 % volatiles, which matters for fogging and for processing at high melt temperatures.
  3. Colour and yellowness. The certificate specifies a transmittance of at least 96 % at 425 nm; colour is measured as yellowness index to ASTM E313, the current standard, not the withdrawn D1925.
  4. Physical form. Irganox 1010 is sold as a white free-flowing powder and also as granules or pastilles (FF and DF grades), which handle and dose differently on the line.
  5. Ash and residues. The same certificate caps ash at 0.1 %, a value a premium grade and a commodity grade do not have to share.

A melting range shows the same spread: Irganox 1010 melts at 110 to 125 °C, a range rather than a single point, so two lots inside one specification can still differ.

Worked Example: Irganox 1010 and Its 10 Stored Equivalents#

A search for Irganox 1010 returns 1 substance, CAS 6683-19-8 and EC 229-722-6, with 10 trade names stored for it. The substance is a primary antioxidant used in polyolefins at 0.05 to 0.4 wt% (BASF), and it is the default search when the tool opens.

Trade name Producer or note, as stored
Irganox 1010 BASF
Songnox 1010 Songwon
ADK STAB AO-60 / Mark AO-60 Adeka
Anox 20 not recorded in this reference
Dovernox 10 Dover
Naugard 10 not recorded in this reference
Sumilizer BP-101 Sumitomo
Ralox 630 not recorded in this reference
Lowinox PP35 not recorded in this reference
Evernox 10 Everspring

The regulatory status, dosage ranges and polymer uses of the substance sit on the Irganox 1010 profile, which the tool links once a profile is published. Under Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 the substance is FCM 496 with no specific migration limit, so only the overall migration limit of 10 mg/dm² applies; in the US, 21 CFR 178.2010 caps it at 0.5 % in food-contact polymers unless otherwise specified.

The 10 names in the table are equivalents by identity. A switch from Irganox 1010 to Songnox 1010 or to Evernox 10 is still a qualification step: the assay, volatiles and transmittance on both datasheets have to meet the specification of the part.

Irganox 1010 is usually dosed together with a phosphite such as Irgafos 168, and blends of the two carry their own trade names. Irganox B 215 is Irgafos 168 and Irganox 1010 at 2:1, and Songnox 11B (1:1) is the equivalent of Irganox B 225; both mechanisms are compared on antioxidants for plastics.

5 Cases Where Trade Names and Chemical Identities Do Not Line Up#

Five cases break the simple rule of one trade name, one CAS number, and the tool shows each one instead of hiding it.

One substance with two CAS numbers#

Chimassorb 944 carries 2 CAS numbers: 71878-19-8 in the EU (EU 10/2011 FCM 740) and 70624-18-9 in the US (TSCA Inventory and 21 CFR 178.2010). A search for either number returns the same record, with 4 trade names: Chimassorb 944 FDL / LD (BASF), SONGSORB 9440 (Songwon), BLS 1944 (Mayzo) and Omnistab LS 944 (Partinchem). The polymeric HALS sits among the hindered amine light stabilizers (HALS), which work by radical scavenging, not UV absorption.

One reaction mass sold under two names#

Tinuvin 292 and Tinuvin 765 are the same registered reaction mass, CAS 1065336-91-5 and EC 915-687-0: 292 is the coatings name and 765 the plastics name. In the same way, Ultranox 626, Irgafos 126, ADK STAB PEP-24 and Songnox 6260 are one substance, CAS 26741-53-7, also known as Antioxidant 626.

One CAS number filed as two records#

Carbon black and electroconductive carbon black share CAS 1333-86-4 and EC 215-609-9, yet the reference files them as 2 records with different trade names. BLACK PEARLS, VULCAN and ELFTEX are stored for the pigment and UV screen, and Ketjenblack EC-300J and EC-600JD for the conductive filler; the grade difference is set out on carbon black in plastics. Fumed silica and precipitated silica share CAS 7631-86-9 in the same way.

Blends that contain the substance#

A search for Tinuvin 770 returns the substance itself, CAS 52829-07-9, plus 1 blend record that names it: Tinuvin 791 is Chimassorb 944 plus Tinuvin 770. The tool lists such records under "Named in a blend or note", because a blend is a different identity, not an equivalent. Exolit OP 1230 shows the same split on one record: Exolit OP 930, OP 935, OP 1230 and OP 1240 are pure aluminium diethylphosphinate grades (CAS 225789-38-8), while OP 1312, OP 1314 and OP 1400 are blends with synergists, the note column says which is which, and both are covered under flame retardants for plastics.

One brand line across several substances#

Preventol and Micro-Chek are stored on 2 different records, DCOIT and OIT, because a brand line can cover more than one active substance. A brand name without its grade code returns every record it appears on, and the CAS number on each record decides which substance a given grade contains.

Where the Trade Name Data Comes From and Its Limits#

The trade names come from the same verified knowledge base as the 437 substance records, compiled from the sources cited on each substance profile. The tool data is regenerated from that knowledge base at each site build, and the build date appears in the tool header.

The data has 5 limits, listed below.

  • Coverage. The reference covers additives used in plastics; chemicals used only in rubber, coatings or food are outside its scope and are not stored.
  • Up to 10 names per substance. The tool stores at most 10 trade names per substance, so a grade missing from the list is not stored, which does not prove it does not exist.
  • Producer column. A producer or note is recorded for 383 of the 920 trade names; the rest read "not recorded in this reference", as 4 of the 10 Irganox 1010 names do.
  • Ownership changes. A brand can move to a new owner after an acquisition, and the producer shown is the one recorded in the source, not a live register.
  • No grade properties. The tool holds identity data only; purity, volatiles and yellowness come from the producer's datasheet.

The full identity, dosage and regulatory record for each substance is in the plastic additives database, and a profile link appears in the tool result once that substance's profile is published.

Trade Name Lookup FAQs#

Six questions come up most often when a trade name has to be translated into a chemical identity.

What is the generic name of Irganox 1010?#

Irganox 1010 is pentaerythritol tetrakis[3-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)propionate], CAS 6683-19-8, EC 229-722-6. Its synonyms include Antioxidant 1010 and AO 1010, and both find the same record.

Is Songnox 1010 the same as Irganox 1010?#

Songnox 1010 and Irganox 1010 share one chemical identity, CAS 6683-19-8. The grades become interchangeable for a given part only after purity, volatiles and yellowness are compared on both datasheets.

What does DOP mean as a plasticizer trade name?#

In trade usage DOP or "dioctyl phthalate" means DEHP, CAS 117-81-7, not di-n-octyl phthalate (DNOP, CAS 117-84-0). A search for DOP returns the DEHP (DOP, dioctyl phthalate) record first.

Is Tinuvin 770 allowed in food-contact plastics?#

Tinuvin 770 is not listed in Annex I of Regulation (EU) No 10/2011. In the US, 21 CFR 178.2010 allows it only in adhesives and at max 0.1 wt% in pressure-sensitive adhesives; the status of any substance is collected in the additive regulatory status checker.

What is Millad 3988?#

Millad 3988 is DMDBS, 1,3:2,4-bis(3,4-dimethylbenzylidene)sorbitol, CAS 135861-56-2, EC 413-110-2, a clarifying agent for polypropylene by Milliken. In the US, 21 CFR 178.3295 caps it at 0.4 wt%.

Where can I buy an equivalent grade?#

Equivalent grades are sold by the producers named in the tool result, such as BASF, Songwon, Adeka and Everspring for Irganox 1010. The plastic additive manufacturers and suppliers directory lists producers by family, and the plastic additive supplier finder takes one 9-field request for quotes for any of the 43 additive families.
